At Summit County Children Services (SCCS), there is a multi-step process to become a licensed foster parent or foster-to-adopt parent. People desiring to adopt a child through Summit County Children Services, must first become foster parents. Review the documents linked below for more information on the foster care-to-adoption process in Ohio and the rights of foster care and adoption applicants.

Foster Care and Adoption Information Meeting
The first step in the process of becoming a foster or foster-to-adopt parent with Summit County Children Services is to attend an information meeting. These meetings are free, open to the public and hosted throughout Summit County Children Services. The information meeting will provide an overview of SCCS and the families and children we serve. All information meetings begin at 6 p.m. unless noted otherwise and typically last an hour with additional time for questions. Advanced registration is not required. Due to the sensitive nature of information discussed, families are discouraged from bringing children to these meetings.
Foster Care and Adoption Pre-Service Training
The next step in the process to become a foster or foster-to-adopt parent is to complete Pre-Service Training. Pre-Service Training is 36 hours of mandatory training for both adult applicants. It is offered five times a year. All sessions take place at the Northeast Ohio Regional Training Center (264 S. Arlington Street; Akron, OH 44306) and last from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. You do not have to attend trainings together; however, both applicants must attend the entire 36 hours prior to being licensed. Policy and procedure training lasts one hour and is held at the beginning of each Pre-Service Training series. This required session will take place in the main building at Summit County Children Services.
Please fill out the form below to register for Pre-Service Training. Indicate your session preference in the comments section on your registration form. Advance registration is required for both the Policy and Procedure and Pre-Service Training. You can also register via email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 330-379-1990 option 2.
