Spotlight on Children & Families

March is National

Social Worker Month

This year's Social Worker Month theme is 'Social Work Paves the Way for Change.' As a social worker myself, I can definitely say that I continue to be impressed as to how the work done by the staff here at Summit County Children Services is the catalyst for so many positive changes in the lives of the families and children we serve. The term 'Making a Difference' has unfortunately become somewhat of a cliché over the years - but I truly can say that those in the social work field bring a fresh meaning to that term. Please join me this month in sincerely thanking all social workers for the very important work they do.

Foster Care & Adoption Info Meetings Scheduled

Summit County Children Services will sponsor two free Foster Care and Adoption Information Meetings over the coming weeks.

  • Monday, March 16 from 6-8 p.m. at Summit County Children Services, 264 S. Arlington St., Akron.
  • Tuesday, April 7 from 6-8 p.m. at the Odom Boulevard Branch Library, 600 Vernon Odom Blvd., Akron. 1486 Aster Ave., Akron.

At the end of January 48 children in agency custody were waiting to be adopted - and of those, 46 were aged 12 and older Area residents who attend the information meeting will learn a variety of details about foster care and adoption including what and how long the process is, what kind of support is provided by the agency, and the minimal costs involved with adopting a child through a public agency such as Summit County Children Services (NOTE: SCCS charges no fees for adoption services). Agency staff will be available to share basic information about the children coming into care. This event is free and open to the entire community and reservations are not needed. For information, log onto summitkids.org or call (330) 379-2055.
