Women's Auxiliary Board Rummage Sale Set for September 10


The Women's Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children Services is holding its annual Rummage Sale on an earlier date this year: Saturday, September 10, from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Fairlawn Community Center, 3486 South Smith Road, Fairlawn.


All rummage donations - such as clothing, housewares, lawn and garden items, craft supplies or accessories - are welcome. Please drop off any donated rummage at the Fairlawn Community Center on Friday, September 9 between 8:30 a.m. - noon. Tax deduction receipts will be available to all donors.


Also new this year, the Women's Board will offer for sale to shoppers coffee, tea, water, donuts, and cookies. Proceeds from the Rummage Sale will be used to directly benefit the children in the care of Summit County Children Services.


The Summit County Children Services Women's Auxiliary Board has been a fixture in the Greater Akron community since it was started in 1948. The organization today numbers nearly 100 members who volunteer countless hours throughout the year in support of numerous Summit County Children Services projects, including the annual Holiday Toy Room which provides gifts for children in agency care.

7th Annual 'Summit for Kids'

At John S. Knight Center August 20

Knight Center in downtown Akron on Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to enjoy fun and educational activities, free back-to-school items and more at the 7th Annual 'Summit for Kids' Celebration. Featured activities include: Immunizations; dental services; back-to-school supplies, crafts and activities, plus entertainment on the main stage. Kids in attendance will also be able to meet Spider-Man and Black Widow from Marvel Entertainment, Walkaround Elmo from Sesame Street, and Minions Lookalikes at the Summit County Children Services booth.



Next Foster Care & Adoption Info Meetings Scheduled


Summit County Children Services' next Foster Care and Adoption Information Meetings will be held: 

  • Wednesday, August 31 at 6 p.m. at the Ellet Branch Library, 2470 E. Market St., Akron
  • Wednesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. at Summit County Children Services, 264 S. Arlington St., Akron

There is always a need for foster and adoptive parents in Summit County. Our agency presently has more than 200 children in foster care - including some 40 children in permanent custody waiting to be adopted. Those attending the information meeting will learn a variety of details about foster care and adoption including what and how long the process is, what kind of support is provided by the agency, and the minimal costs involved with adopting a child through a public agency such as Summit County Children Services. Agency staff will be available to share basic information about the children coming into care.


This event is free and open to the entire community and reservations are not needed. For information, call (330) 379-1990.

Local Barber College Offering Free Kids Haircuts August 31


Beyond Expectations Barber College (BEBC), 2202 Romig Rd., Akron, will offer free 'basic' haircuts to area children, grades K through 12, on Wednesday, August 31 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. The first 300 students will receive a fresh new look for school, at absolutely no cost to parents. Recovery Walk Scheduled for September 10


As part of Summit County's observance of September as 'National Recovery Month,' in partnership with Square Fest and a variety of community organizations the free 4th Annual 5K 'Recovery Walk' will kick-off on Saturday, September 10 at Noon at Oriana Day Reporting, 750 W. Market St. in Akron's Highland Square District. (Overflow parking for participants will be at Akron UMADAOP, 665 W. Market St.).


Everyone who wants to will be able to create a sign to walk with honoring a loved one who fought a battle with addiction; materials will be provided for free. The walk will highlight the many advocacy efforts and services available to the growing number of individuals and families who wish to access and sustain long-term recovery. Recovery Walk participants will spend a family-friendly afternoon of fun, food and fellowship while learning more about the many recovery support and treatment providers in our area.
